Today was an exciting day in our ranch-style house remodel. Some of this house’s ugliest elements met their demise during todays demolition. From the moment I set one foot in the door I was horrified by the mosaic floor tile in the kitchen, dining room, and main hallway. It set the tone for the whole house and the tone was ugly. I suppose it was 1970’s chic in 1972, but in 2015 it is just plain ugly. Today, thanks to Pablo, Julio, and some pry bars, the ugly mosaic tile is gone. We were pleasantly surprised when we discovered that the mosaic tile was the only flooring over the subfloor. It is always more difficult to tear away layers of flooring and we were relieved to not have to do that.
Another big change today was the opening of the wall dividing the dining room from the living room and closing off the small entrance to the left. I hated that wide, useless pass thru near the ceiling in the dining room.
I think it looks more like a living room now than a garage conversion, which it never was!
I can see the kitchen now and how awesome it will look when it is done. The large cabinets in the back have been removed to make way for our new side by side freezer/refrigerators.
Yesterday I promised to reveal the secret of this silly little kitchen cabinet.
When you open the cabinet door, you find out it is a chair, attached to a cabinet door, with a drawer under the seat, located directly above a heat/air vent! OMG, have you even seen anything as silly as this?
Speechless. It is being torn out tomorrow leaving the space blank for a vintage piece or perhaps a baker’s rack to hold cookbooks.
Tomorrow will be an exciting day as the remainder of the paneling comes down and the ceiling and walls get taped and mudded. Check back to see the progress.
