Last week Mary Jane Robbins, (MJ) over at King Arthur Flour promised that I could make delicious homemade egg noodles in 35 minutes. What? A challenge? A timed test? A gauntlet thrown down?
I am a competitive person by nature. Old age and multiple medical maladies have slowed me down a bit, but I still love to win. I didn’t have plans for dinner so I took the challenge. I’ll cut to the chase. I didn’t “win” by beating MJ’s time. I didn’t even tie. I barely made edible noodles at all.I summed up my experience in a comment to MJ. Here is that comment with her kind reply:
Mary O’Brien says:
I made these last night and I was so excited to eat them. I even grilled sausage on my indoor grill so mine would look just like MJ’s. I dropped the noodles in the boiling water and the anticipation mounted. Then poof! The circuit breaker to the stove blew and it turned off, not just the grill but the burners too. My beautiful noodles sat in hot water until my husband got the breaker reset. I was worried about over-cooking so I just brought the water back up to a boil, drained and served the noodles with butter and parsley. I should have tasted them first. They were extra al dente but flavorful. My husband loved them! I’ll try them again soon.
OH Mary, what a surprise that must have been! I’ve had my oven go out during baking, but never the stove top. I’m glad you enjoyed the noodles in spite of the trials. Just think how delish they will be next time! ~ MJ
Here’s what I learned from the experience.
- The circuit breaker for my stove is the same one for the A/C.
- Smoked chicken sausage with Portobello Mushrooms and Swiss Cheese is really good when grilled.
- There is no noodle too al dente for Michael.
- My old lady hands aren’t strong enough to roll pasta.
- I am going to try this again, after I buy a pasta machine.
I’ll be back Mary Jane. I’ll be back. Your rolling pin vs. my pasta machine.
