Hens are notoriously proud of their accomplishments, most importantly the laying of an egg. Egg laying can be done solo but it is apparently a lot more fun as a group activity. There is a song that hens sing, commonly referred to as The Egg Song. One does not have to actually lay an egg to sing the song, in fact, some roosters join in singing the egg song. The mere thought of laying an egg can trigger spontaneous singing, much like in movie musicals. Once one hen starts singing they all start singing. I spent a few deafening minutes in the coop a couple of days ago and video recorded a hen party, including the actual laying of an egg. Many times the party goes on for hours with nary an egg laid. I got lucky. Please enjoy this brief look into the private lives of Icelandic laying hens. Next time you enjoy one over easy, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for the the humble chicken egg.
