Michael came into my office a few days ago and asked if I had seen the commercials for Eggies on TV. I told him I had and that I was going to buy them and do a product review for my blog. Well, I finally found them at our local Walgreens Drugstore. They came in a six pack for $9.99. My plan was to follow the directions explicitly, not read any reviews before trying them, and to write my review. The plan fell apart because there were no instructions. There are cute pictures on the box that say “Crack” “Boil” and “Twist” That is all I had to go on.
I can say that the package and the television ads are totally deceptive. What they don’t show or tell you is that each eggie consists of five parts. They have to be assembled. Assembly of my six eggies took over 30 minutes. The parts are obviously molded and when they were molded some of the plastic squeezed out around the seams making it impossible to screw or snap the pieces together. I had to use an exacto knife to cut away the excess plastic so that they would go together. Each eggie also has a white plastic gasket. At the end of the assembly I had one of the gaskets left over so I had to take each one apart again and find out where it was supposed to go. I finally got them all put together and ready to fill.
Remember, I have no instructions but I am thinking that the egg is going to stick to the plastic and be hard to get out. The commercial makes it appear as if these are made of that soft, pliable, silicone material. WRONG! They are clear, hard plastic. The commercial shows the eggs falling right out of the eggie. I decided to spray a little cooking spray to the inside, just in case. (Later, research confirmed that the eggies with instructions advise that this be done) I am still flying by the seat of my pants though.
I carefully cracked eggs and poured them into the eggies. Some of them were too large and either the yolk broke or the white dripped all over the counter. My eggs are laid right here on the ranch and my girls don’t even lay large eggs. Finally, I managed to get six eggs, yolks intact into the eggies.
Then I screwed the caps on as tightly as I could without breaking them.
As the water was just coming to a boil I carefully placed each eggie into the boiling water using tongs.
Everything seemed fine at first but as the water began to boil, the eggies started leaking egg white into the water.
The eggie in the top of the picture lost about half of it’s white.
I pulled it out of the water and opened it. You have to be careful because they leak and water gets inside and spurts out when you unscrew the lid. It did not come out easily. I had to use a knife and run it all the way around and down to the bottom to loosen the egg.
You can see how much water got inside too.
This is how it looked unmolded.
I took the others out of the water and carefully removed the tops with minimal injury. They look really cute in their little cups.
They don’t look so cute on the plate.
They got tucked into small baggies for egg salad sandwiches tomorrow.
The worst was the mess I was left with. Thirty individual pieces to clean, counting the gaskets.
I decided to return the pieces back into the boiling water they came out of plus I added a little Dawn dishwashing liquid. I am hoping they will soak enough tonight so that I won’t look like a complete slob when I return them to Walgreens.
Had I boiled eggs in their shells I would have a pile of egg shells instead of this mess. I wouldn’t have to wash them or store them. I could compost them, bake them and feed them back to the chickens for the calcium, or simply throw them away. My six eggies will be in a landfill somewhere when my grandchildren are old and grey. Don’t waste your money on this product. After doing my independent test, I read the online reviews and found that almost everyone had the same experience as I had. The sad part is many of them bought from the TV ads, had to pay up to $61.00 total with shipping, and wait 6 to 10 weeks. Now they have to pay the shipping to return them! Be smart. Boil eggs the old fashioned way. I am giving it zero stars!
