Bagels and Lox

September 16, 2011

I learned to make lox and bagels from my friend Susan. There are rules that must be followed but I had to break one this morning. Traditionally the recipe calls for sliced red onion. I blew right past the produce department in the grocery store this morning and got home without red onions. I substituted sweet yellow onion. Mea culpa, bigtime.

Ingredients
  • New York style bagels
  • Cream Cheese
  • Red Onion, sliced paper thin
  • Lox, I like the peppered kind
  • Capers
Instructions
  1. Toast the bagel. Let it cool just a bit, then spread on the cream cheese. Layer on as much of the lox as you like, followed by the onion and capers. There is debate about whether tomato belongs on a lox bagel, but you can add one slice of fresh tomato if you like. Enjoy outside on the patio with a hot cup of coffee.
