Believe it or not, we returned our adorable emu baby to the breeder today. She was just out of control, sleeping till noon, watching TV all night and surfing the internet all day! She’s probably max’d out our credit cards shopping for jewelry online. Emus love jewelry.
I am just kidding about why we returned her but we did return her.
We have been waiting for more emus to hatch at the breeders because we wanted two more to improve our chances of having a pair. Well, a total of three babies finally hatched in the last 48 hours. If we took two of those, the breeder would be stuck raising an “only” emu. If you haven’t raised chicks you have no appreciation of what raising a single one is like. So we decided to give her back the emu we bought two weeks ago, in exchange for a free emu baby with the two we were buying. The idea was that our emu, at three weeks old, is accustomed to being an only chick and doesn’t know the difference. Secondly, the three new babies are the same age and will be easier to keep together. The big one really needed moved out of my office! So we met the breeder at the feed store and exchanged our big ole’ baby for three little bitty babies. Eve, the emu breeder, prepared herself by purchasing the identical Snuggie sleeping bag the emu has been sleeping in at our house. We last saw her carrying the baby around the feed store in the sleeping bag.
We got home with our new babies, took a couple of pictures and they settled in for the night in the Snuggie sleeping bag previously occupied by the big ole’ baby. They have only been out once!
I made a post to my emu friends online about trading the spoiled baby in for three new ones. This was the reply from the breeder:
“And you accuse ME of spoiling the first emu chick! If we’re not holding “Baby” or actively playing with he/she/it we face a major tantrum . I put away the brooder and now have Baby set up in a wire crate; Snuggie in place and shiny bird toys hung to play with. I suppose I need to move a TV in there so “we” don’t miss Judge Judy”
We are still laughing. I programmed my phone not to accept her calls.
